Call for Applications for the 8th International Postgrad Summer School in Lesbos, Greece

Deadline: 15 April 2019
Open to: participants from around the world
Venue: 2 – 11 July 2019 in Lesbos, Greece

Description

For the eighth year the Department of Social Anthropology and History of the University of the Aegean and the Institute of Migration and Ethnic Studies of the Universityof Amsterdam welcome applications for the Postgraduate International Summer School ‘CULTURES, MIGRATIONS, BORDERS’ that will take place on the border island of LESVOS, GREECE, from 2 to 11 JULY 2019.

The broader socioeconomic and political transformations in Africa and Asia have recently resulted in increased migration flows to Greece and, more generally, to Europe. Being at the crossroads of populations and cultures the islands of Eastern Aegean have served as one of the entry “gates” to Europe. In this context, and especially in connection to the current crisis, border crossings have become the focus of intense debates as they are intertwined with issues of culture and identity formation, the European Union and state policy, and constructions of ‘otherness’. By drawing on an increasing interest in the study of cultures, migrations and borders, our Summer School examines how migrations shape and are shaped by processes of boundary formation in a variety of cultural encounters.

The North Eastern Aegean island of LESVOS provides an ideal location for holding this Summer School, as it is currently one of the more important gates of immigrants and refugees to Greece and Europe and the site of a massive humanitarian intervention. The Summer School takes place as the ‘European Refugee Crisis’ goes on taking new forms and in times of radical transformations and the reconfiguration of borders in national and international levels. The program aims to address political, ethical and theoretical questions in this challenging landscape.

The program of the course is structured around five thematic axes:

Theoretical and methodological issues in the study of migration and borders.

Institutional and political aspects of the migratory condition.

People on the move: immigrant groups, refugees and host communities.

Cross-cultural encounters across borders and interactions of host/immigrant on the border.

The politics of humanitarian aid and the ‘refugee crisis’.

Along with the seminars, the program includes some further activities. The participants will be given the opportunity to interact with citizens on the island assisting refugees and meet asylum seekers. A fieldtrip to Mytilene is organized for this purpose as well as some activities in Plomari. While acquainting themselves with the reality of migration on an Aegean island, participants will develop research skills and learn how to place their findings within wider local and global processes. Doctoral students and researchers will also have the opportunity to present their work at the PhD/Reseach Seminars. The Summer School includes the public screening of films on migration and border-crossing as well as it offers a variety of social and leisure activities.

A certificate of attendance will be awarded to all participants.

Eligibility

Postgraduate students with a background in the social sciences, PhD candidates and researchers, undergraduates at their final year of studies and professionals working at NGOs or other institutions are all eligible to apply. We encourage you to apply if you are interested in the theme of migration. The selection will depend on the evaluation of the applicant’s academic profile and motivation.

Cost & Scholarship

The Summer School fees are €500. Accommodation, food and transportation costs are not included but can be obtained at
Call for Applications for the 8th International Postgrad Summer School in Lesbos, Greece Call for Applications for the 8th International Postgrad Summer School in Lesbos, Greece

Participants engage in a structured comparative scenario analysis and research generation exercise facilitated by Bridging the Gap fellows. Through this innovative format, participants assess the medium-term challenges and opportunities currently facing the world, critically examine the macro-level goals that underpin American foreign policy, and problematize the strategies and policies meant to achieve these goals. On the basis of these discussions, participants are led through a process to help generate and shape policy-relevant research ideas. In the past, these ideas have contributed to participants’ dissertation projects and have also resulted in conference papers, published academic articles, and pieces in policy journals.

NEW also includes a professional development and networking component, with sessions built around the involvement of foreign policy experts. Previous such experts have come from the National Security Council, the Department of Defense, the RAND Corporation, the Central Intelligence Agency, the Brookings Institution, NPR, the United States Mission to the United Nations, Foreign Policy magazine, and the Council on Foreign Relations.

The goals of NEW are three-fold:

To continue bringing together and building a network of Political Science PhD students who are policy-oriented and interested in international affairs

To invigorate the foreign policy community with fresh ideas and new avenues for future research

To equip a new generation of international affairs scholars with the tools for conducting and disseminating policy-relevant research

For questions about the New Era Workshop, please visit our Frequently Asked Questions page.

To learn more about the comparative scenario analysis used at NEW, please review an example scenario set from the 2007 New Era Foreign Policy Conference. In this situation, people need a support and this can only come from leaders of society, particularly political leaders. They need to exhale the force that protects the vulnerable people and enables people with initiative to press the accelerator for maximizing profits. Call for Applications, #PhD Course on ” #Societal #Security: #Critical #Perspectives”

Deadline: 10 September 2018
Open to: PhD candidates receive priority but graduate students and post-docs from relevant disciplines
Venue: 17 – 19 Oct 2018 at Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB), Belgium

Description

This course provides an overview of scholarly perspectives and debates on policies, perceptions, actors, economy, ethics and technology of security in Europe.

The course is organised by PRIO and VUB in collaboration with the Societal Security Network (SOURCE) – Virtual Centre of Excellence on Societal Security in Europe – in association with the Nordic Centre for Security Technology and Societal Values (NordSTEVA).

Conflict with Russia, fight against IS, aftershocks of the global financial crisis, cyber attacks, nationalism and the ‘refugee crisis’ are shaping a new era of security in Europe. The post-Cold War period is over, where international war was a thing of the past and political liberalism the universal future. Yet, how should we conceive the current state of security politics in Europe?

In the absense of the existential military threat of the Cold War, the attention of security politics shifted towards a range of ‘new’ threats – man-made and natural, partly related to our reliance on advanced technology (as in Ulrich Beck’s notion of ‘risk society’). Pandemics, industry accidents, pollution, flooding, global warming and terrorism were among the dangers included in this broadened notion of national/civil/internal/homeland security.

While introduced with a more narrow focus on social identities, the concept of ‘societal security’ was picked up by politicians, bureaucrats, security industry and academics to describe how this development involved a shift from the traditional referent object of security – the sovereignty of the nation-state – to the security of society at large. Beyond material aspects of life such as physical protection, shelter, subsistence and critical infrastructure, societal security includes complex social aspects such as values, ideas, confidence, trust and belonging. In contrast to the individual centric notion of ‘human security’, it nonetheless concentrates on that which is of shared public concern – complementing private and corporate security.

This course invites a reassessment of security politics in Europe through a critical engagement with the notion of societal security. Sessions investigate key aspects including threat perceptions, security actors, institutional dynamics, relations between financial and societal security, new security technology and the ethics of security.
